Tributes have flooded in for the actor, described as "fiercely intelligent and remarkably kind", after his death was announced on Wednesday.

On Thursday, his representative, Jennifer Allen, released a short statement saying he died from lung cancer, a few months after being diagnosed with the illness.

Braugher was best known for his portrayal of uptight Captain Raymond Holt in US comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, depicting New York police officers in the fictional 99th precinct.

The hit show ran for eight seasons from 2013 until 2021, cementing Braugher's place as an international comedy actor.

He was also known for playing police detective Frank Pembleton in the gritty crime drama, Homicide: Life On The Street, a role which earned him an Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a drama series in 1998.

In total, he was nominated for an Emmy 11 times, of which four were for Brooklyn Nine-Nine as best supporting actor in a comedy series.

Born Andre Keith Braugher on 1 July 1962 in Chicago, Illinois, the actor's breakout role was in the 1990 film Glory, starring alongside Hollywood stars Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington - who won his first Academy Award for his supporting role in the film.

Braugher is survived by his wife, Ami Brabson, also an actor on Homicide: Life On The Street, and three sons, according to entertainment website, IMDb.
