Kasabian announce huge hometown show at Leicester's Victoria Park - 'This is our arena'

December 04, 2023

Kasabian have announced a huge hometown show in Leicester - and told Sky News they are "creating memories" and hoping to inspire younger artists as they put on a night to remember.

The band played their first major gig in the city's Victoria Park in June 2014, just days before going on to headline Glastonbury.

After entertainment company Live Nation submitted an application for a premises licence earlier this year, they are now set to return to the site in Leicester once again.

"It's creating memories, creating things that are etched in your brain forever," Kasabian songwriter and frontman Serge Pizzorno told Sky News as he announced the gig.

"Seeing something like this in your hometown, you know - the sound, the noise, the music - those memories, that's what you take with you when you look back on your life and it's like, you've gotta be there, you can't miss it, you can't let this happen and not be at that gig, you know?

"It's creating those moments and doing it where you're from and inspiring the next wave, hopefully, of young kids in Leicester seeing it happen and then them starting a band, that's kind of what it's all about."

'It's something we can give back to the city'

"It's a big deal because it's our hometown," says bassist Chris Edwards. "It's 10 years after the first one, it's something we've always wanted to do again, and it's something that we can give back to the city.

"There's no big arena in Leicester, so this is our arena. This is where the big shows happen. And so to be able to do it again is just a privilege."

Kasabian are known for going all out to put on gigs for fans in Leicester, having previously played shows in a disused plane at an aerodrome, as well as at Leicester City's King Power stadium, which does not usually host music gigs - two quickly-organised events after the club beat odds of 5,000-1 to win the Premier League in 2016.

"That's exactly why it's so important that we do it here [in Leicester]," Pizzorno adds. "So you can show that it can be done, you can put on a massive show here.

"We've got a fanbase all over the world, we can invite everyone for that night in Leicester."

The announcement comes following Radio 2 In The Park, headlined by Kylie Minogue, which was held at the site in the summer.

'Everyone has moved on'

While Kasabian have toured over the past few years, this will be their first big hometown show following the departure of Tom Meighan. The former frontman left in 2020 after assaulting his then girlfriend, who he later married.

Pizzorno, who founded the band with Meighan and Edwards, has since taken over the frontman role.

"Everyone's just moved on," he says, when asked how it feels to announce a Leicester show without Meighan. "We've been around the world three times [since he left]. We've had a number one album out. We've all moved on."

After first putting on a "Summer Solstice" gig in Victoria Park in 2014 they had planned a second for 2020, but had to call it off after the COVID pandemic hit.

The Leicester gig announcement comes following the release of their chart-topping sixth album The Alchemist's Euphoria in 2022. Their seventh, Happenings, will be released in 2024.

After forming in Leicester in the 1990s, Kasabian released their eponymous debut album in 2004, charting at number four. Since then, all their albums have topped the charts in the UK and their third, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, was nominated for the Mercury Prize.

A pre-sale for tickets to the Leicester gig begins at 9.30am on Thursday 7 December, while the general sale opens at 9.30am on Friday 8 December.
