Chris Evans reveals he is clear of cancer, eight weeks after diagnosis

September 20, 2023

Radio presenter Chris Evans says he has received the "all-clear" after being diagnosed with skin cancer two months ago.

The 57-year-old shared an email from his surgeon during his Virgin Radio show on Wednesday, before telling co-presenters Vassos Alexander and Rachel Horne he was surprised he "lost a night's sleep" over it.

Evans previously told listeners that he had a biopsy after finding an irregular mole on his leg, which came back positive for melanoma.

On Wednesday, Alexander read out the email Evans received from his surgeon the night before, which confirmed the "excellent news" that he had "the all-clear".

Evans added: "I had a phone conversation with my dermatologist, and she told me that... the freckle had moved, metastasised, was malignant... and that I would need treatment, and would have to have it removed.

"So we did, and that was last Thursday. And so, at quarter-to-four last Thursday, I had cancer and at quarter-to-five, I didn't.

"And I just found that out last night. And that's because time is your biggest weapon against it, if you have an abundance of it, and its biggest weapon against you if you have a lack of it."

The former Top Gear host was later joined by fellow radio DJ Eddy Temple-Morris, with both stressing the importance of getting yourself checked for cancer.

Evans said: "If you're worried about anything, just bear in mind the fact that eight weeks ago I was diagnosed with cancer and now I don't have it at all.

"And that's why you just need to attend to things. And it's really tough, because for years I was the guy who wouldn't go anywhere near that. But you know, times have changed, thank God."

Evans joined Virgin Radio in 2018, when he left the coveted BBC Radio 2 breakfast show, taking most of his production team with him.

He had been a mainstay at the BBC, hosting The One Show and having a stint on Top Gear, having previously fronted Channel 4 shows TFI Friday and The Big Breakfast.
