'Proud' part-owner Ryan Reynolds sells Mint Mobile to T-Mobile in deal worth more than £1bn

March 16, 2023

Budget wireless provider Mint Mobile, which is partially owned by actor Ryan Reynolds, is being acquired by T-Mobile as part of a cash and stock deal worth up to $1.35bn (£1.1bn).

T-Mobile has purchased Ka'ena Corp, giving it access to Mint, together with Ultra Mobile and wholesaler, Plum.

The brands already use T-Mobile for their network but will be run as a separate business unit.

Reynolds, 46, tweeted: "I never dreamt I'd own a wireless company and I certainly never dreamt I'd sell it to T-Mobile.

"Life is strange and I'm incredibly proud and grateful."

The Deadpool actor and co-owner of Wrexham AFC also shared a video in which he appears alongside T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert.

Mr Sievert tells Reynolds: "We are so happy to have you and the whole Mint team join the T-Mobile family."

Reynolds joked: "Ha! Well, I wouldn't call it a family, Mike.

"Family is a place for misdirected hopes and dreams.

"I'm hoping this will be much better than that."

He added: "I'm absolutely thrilled with every aspect of this new venture."

T-Mobile is acquiring the brands' sales, marketing, digital and service operations.

It plans to try and grow the brands and offer competitive pricing and a greater device inventory to US consumers.

Reynolds will remain at Mint in a creative role.

Mr Sievert said the company plans to boost Mint's already thriving digital direct-to-consumer business.

"Over the long-term, we'll also benefit from applying the marketing formula Mint has become famous for across more parts of T-Mobile," Mr Sievert said.

"We think customers are really going to win with a more competitive and expansive Mint and Ultra."

Reynolds and fellow Hollywood star, Rob McElhenney - best known for appearing in comedy series, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - took control of Wrexham AFC in February 2021, investing £2m as part of a takeover deal.

Reynolds described the Red Dragons takeover as the "role of a lifetime".

In November last year he and McElhenney were handed a prestigious Dragon Award at a star-studded gala to honour their work to promote Wales and the Welsh language to the world.

A month later the pair met King Charles and the Queen Consort as part of a royal visit to Wrexham to celebrate its new city status.

The King hailed the football club for "putting Wrexham on the map" while the Queen Consort described the club's story as "extraordinary".
