2 Sisters in Llangefnni, Anglesey, is set to close on 31 March after no alternatives to closure were found.

Isle of Anglesey County Council's leader has called the announcement "devastating news for the workforce and their families".

It is expected that only 25-30 members of staff of the current 730 will be employed on-site as of 1 April.

The company, founded in 1993, has its headquarters in Birmingham.

The final formal consultation meeting between company bosses, Unite and employee representatives was held on Wednesday and it was confirmed that there were "no viable alternatives to closure".

The 45-day consultation process formally ends on Sunday, 12 March, but both parties have agreed that consultation has been exhausted.

In a joint statement 2 Sisters Food Group and Unite the Union say the likelihood is that the site's status will change from a proposal to cease operations to an intention to close on Monday, 13 March.

Bosses had announced in January that the plant was "no longer sustainable" and that it could face closure.

Support events for staff will be held over the coming weeks, with production values "significantly reduced".

Anglesey Council Leader, Councillor Llinos Medi, added: "Our priority now will be to support them as much as possible and ensure that all 2 Sisters task force partners continue to work together on their behalf.

"We must also focus on the long-term future of the site and the impact losing more than 700 jobs will have on the future of the Island and regional economy."
