Service users from Victoria Avenue Day Services buried a time capsule which will be unearthed in 25 years’ time.
The centre provides a variety of support to people with learning disabilities, people with autism and older people, including those with memory impairment conditions.
The time capsule included current news stories and a copy of a service leaflet from when the centre opened in 1982. A recent service leaflet was added to show the change in times and how far Victoria Avenue Day Services have come since.
Service users also worked with the life skills group to create and include items which are reflective of their experience. These items included a book about themselves, drawings, a timetable and decorated cards.
Family members and carers of the service users came along to show their support and share treasured memories of the service. A parent of former service user who sadly passed away earlier this year also attended to join in the celebration.
Service user Anne-Marie who has visited the day service for the last 29 years said: ‘’I really enjoyed looking at what was going into the time capsule,’’ and that it ‘’was nice to be included’’ in the celebration.
Tom Denham, service manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “The burial of the time capsule has been a much-anticipated event by those who attend the service and it was great to see the service users and staff engage with finding and making items to bury for the future.
‘’We are all grateful for the continued support from the families and carers who came down to support the day too.”
‘’This event not only celebrates the rich history of Victoria Avenue Day Services but also highlights the progress and positive changes we have made over the years. We hope that those who unearth the capsule in 25 years’ time will enjoy looking through items inside!”
