Leisure centres across the East Riding will have solar canopies installed in their car parks, reducing both costs and carbon emissions.
The solar carports will be installed this spring at council-owned leisure centres in Beverley, Bridlington, Hornsea, Driffield and Pocklington. They will also be installed at Carnaby and Annie Reed Road depots, and Champney Treasure House.
The scheme will cost of £900,000. £350,000 has been awarded from Great British Energy, administrated by the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority.
These canopies are expected to generate 430,650 kilowatts per year of electricity, saving the council around £100,000 per year on electricity bills and reducing carbon emissions by 426 tons over the next 25 years.
During the installation process, some areas of the car parks will be closed, This will be communicated to leisure centres members and visitors ahead of time. All installations are forecast to be completed by April.
