Smoking, healthy eating, exercise… How to stick to your New Year Resolution in the East Riding

Whether you want to get more active or meet new people, or maybe you want to stop smoking or reduce your alcohol intake, here are some helpful local support and community groups.

Want to quit smoking?

East Riding residents who are thinking about stopping smoking can register for Healthier Futures, the council’s free lifestyle change programme in partnership with Xyla.

The friendly and experienced Healthier Futures coaches run structured and personal 12-week plans which are offered either face-to-face at community venues across East Riding, or completely virtually over the phone if more convenient.

The East Riding ‘Quit Smoking’ programme currently provides up to 12 weeks’ of free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), with a choice of patches, gums or sprays to choose from. The team will support you to form healthy and lasting habits to stop smoking for good, including help with controlling cravings and behaviour change techniques.

Head to www.healthier-futures.co.uk to fill in an assessment form or call 0330 236 9102 to find out more. Alternatively, you can email: HealthierFuturesEastRiding@xylahealth.com

The Healthier Futures team will then get in touch directly to do your referral and get you booked onto a weekly local clinic.

Live in Hull? You can get support to quit through SmokeFree Hull or call (01482) 977617.

Looking to reduce your drinking habits or concerned about someone?

Why not give Dry January a go after Christmas? Changing regular habits and learning to drink more healthily can make a big difference and Dry January provides a great head start to make a more positive long-term change. Alcohol is the biggest risk factor for death, ill-health and disability for age 15-49 in the UK. Cutting back long-term reduces your risk of developing these conditions.

Going alcohol-free will mean you sleep better and have more energy; lose weight; save money; improve your concentration and gain a sense of achievement!

A month alcohol-free has been proven to:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduce diabetes risk
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Reduce levels of cancer-related proteins in the blood.

Visit the Dry January website for more information about the benefits.
