Share your views on new Lelley Fields memorial garden

Consultation events are being held so you can have your say on plans for permanent memorials for those affected by an investigation into a funeral home.

Memorial gardens will be built at the Northern Cemetery in Hull and at Lelley Fields Crematorium near Preston in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

They will be peaceful and respectful settings, which fit in with the character and appearance of both facilities.

Families at the centre of the investigation were first consulted on the proposals, and an online form has been available for anyone to offer their thoughts.

Now, the chance to see the plans in person and chat to council staff about them will be available during three consultation events next month:

  • Saturday, 5 April, 10am – 12pm, Hull History Centre, Worship Street, Hull, HU2 8BG
  • Monday, 14 April, 10am – 2pm, Champney Treasure House, Champney Road, Beverley, HU17 8HE
  • Wednesday, 23 April, 10am – 2pm, at Lonsdale Community Centre, 8 Lonsdale Street, Hull, HU3 6PA

Bereavement Services staff will be available at the drop-in sessions, which anyone is free to attend with no prior booking needed.

Hull City Council’s director of adult social care, Tracy Meyerhoff, who is leading the work to support the families and communities affected by the incident in Hull, said: “We’ve been carefully considering the feedback we’ve received so far on the plans, and I’d like to thank everyone who has contacted us.

“Whilst it’s important that those affected families have the chance to shape the memorial gardens, we really do want the views of our wider communities as well.

“These events in Hull and Beverley are a great way to get more information from our dedicated and professional Bereavement Services team members.”

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s recovery lead for the incident, and director of housing, transportation and public protection, Angela Dearing, said: “Our councils have worked closely with the staff at the Northern Cemetery and Lelley Fields to ensure the memorial gardens are going to be in the right place and of suitable design.

“This means that some of the parts of the designs can’t be changed, but there are a number of elements where we would really value views from our residents, so that we can make sure we can build gardens that are a fitting place for lasting remembrance.”

The independent charity Victim Support continues to run a dedicated helpline and support service for anyone affected by the incident on 0808 281 1136.
