As the Three Lions bow out of the World Cup, Humberside Police Chief Inspector Alasdair Booth has shared thanks as the England matches passed with minimal disruption.
“The 2026 FIFA World Cup games have been difficult to catch due to the time differences, with many staying awake into the early hours of the morning to watch the football.
“Despite the later kick of times I am pleased to confirm that most people have been enjoying the football in a respectful manner. Since the tournament kicked off on Thursday, 11 June, we have only received reports of a handful of football related incidents” said Ch Insp Booth.
“Football and particularly international tournaments often bring both joy and anguish to fans, and we continue to encourage everyone to enjoy the rest of the tournament in a respectful manner whilst being considerate and tolerant of others, particularly in England’s third place play-off on Saturday.
“Thankfully, there have been few reports of violence and antisocial behaviour connected to the World Cup. I am particularly appreciative of the actions of everyone, both members of the public and our officers.
“Whilst it can be harder to quantify instances of domestic abuse, I would like to reiterate that there is help out there. We are aware these reports increase when England play, however I want to be clear, there is never an excuse for domestic abuse.
“I would urge anyone that suspects someone they know is suffering abuse to please call us on 101, or 999 in an emergency.
“If you suspect a loved one, neighbour, colleague or friend is suffering in silence, you can report your suspicions to us on 101 or 999 in an emergency. We will deal with each case thoroughly and sensitively.”
