Humberside Police issue bike security advice ahead of Christmas

Bikes have often been a popular Christmas gift. Unfortunately, cycle theft remains high in the Humberside area. The force is now encouraging owners to register their bike, whether it is new or old, on Bike Register: https://www.bikeregister.com/ or Immobilise: http://www.immobilise.com/.

A lot of cycle theft is opportunist. Thieves notice an unlocked and unattended cycle.

The force is also urging owners to be careful when sharing details about bikes on social media, as some thieves use it to target high value cycles to steal.

Humberside Police offered the following crime prevention advice:

  • Ensure your bike is always locked when not in use, in a secure building.
  • If you’re out and about, make sure your bike is locked whenever you leave it unattended.
  • Storing bikes in a garage or shed? Secure them with a strong lock and consider fitting an alarm.
  • Remove cycle carriers from your car when they’re not in use.
  • Think twice when sharing your riding stats or pictures of your bike on social media, especially if your home is visible in the photograph. Be sure to check your security settings as well if using them and set at least a 1000m exclusion zone around your house
