Humberside Police focus on pedestrian, cyclist and horse rider safety

Officers from the Humberside Police Roads Policing Unit will be joining forces across the country as part of the National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC) Campaign, ‘Operation Dark Night’, which this year focuses on the risks to pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.

Over the next two weeks (Monday, 27 October – Sunday, 9 November) officers will be educating road users on driving with caution around vulnerable road users. As well as working with pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders to encourage the use of high visibility reflective clothing and handing out bike lights to cyclists as they face higher risks during low-light conditions.  Alongside this, officers will be conducting roadside vision screening and sharing important information about how motorists can keep their vision clear in all light conditions.

Inspector Neil Hutchins from the Humberside Roads Policing Unit said: “We’re supporting the ‘Operation Dark Night’ campaign which aims to help reduce collisions on our roads.

“As the nights draw in, we’re urging everyone to look out for each other on the roads. Whether you’re behind the wheel or out walking, cycling, or riding, visibility is key.

“A simple change like wearing reflective gear or checking your headlights can make all the difference. My team will be out there talking to road users, handing out bike lights, and doing vision checks to help keep everyone safe.

Humberside Police are also urging drivers to make sure they have regular eye tests.

Inspector Neil Hutchins added:

“Most drivers know that worn or defective tyres on their vehicle can result in a fine and penalty points, but they are less likely to realise that driving with uncorrected defective eyesight is punishable with a fine of up to £1,000, three penalty points and possible disqualification.

“Ninety per cent of the information a driver uses is visual so over the next two weeks my officers will be out in force conducting roadside screening checks to raise awareness of the fundamental importance of good eyesight, whilst educating road users in an effort to make our roads safer.”
