Roadworks on the seafront in Hornsea are getting underway.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council is to invest £250,000 to repair and upgrade the road and footpath in South Promenade, which has been damaged by the recent, prolonged severe weather and cold temperatures.
The scheme aims to strengthen the existing road between Broadway and Hornsea Burton Road by laying a new surface course and carrying out structural patching in order to reduce the risk of future storm damage.
The project, which also includes extensive drainage work, kerbing and footpath patching, is scheduled to begin on Monday 23 February and is due to take between six to eight weeks to complete, weather permitting.
This will follow initial preparation works set to be carried out on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 February, when the road will be closed between 8am and 5pm, but reopened in the evenings.
Then when the major work begins, on Monday 23 February, the road will be completely closed 24 hours a day for the duration of the scheme.
A signed diversion route for traffic will be in place between Hornsea Burton Road, Trinity Road, Rolston Road, Southgate, Market Place, the Bull Ring Roundabout, Market Place, Newbegin, New Road, Broadway and Sands Lane.
The Hornsea rescue slipway will remain open to allow the boat to access the beach at all times.
Access for bin collections, deliveries and emergency services will not be restricted.
While vehicular access to businesses inside the working area will be maintained, there may be temporary restrictions.
There will also be access for pedestrian, although there are likely to be diversions at some times to allow work to be carried out on the paths.
The project will be carried out by contractor Britcon Ltd, on behalf of the council.
Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said:
“Thank you in advance to local residents, drivers, businesses and visitors for bearing with us while we carry out these improvements.
“While this isn’t an ideal location to be closed, it is essential that we repair this road and strengthen it against the elements before the summer season begins.
“We would ask drivers and pedestrians to please follow the diversions and any instructions given by our team to ensure this work can be completed on time.”
