Young carers across East Riding are invited to take time out and connect with others at a special ‘Give Me a Break!’ event on Wednesday, 9 April.
Organised by young carers, for young carers, this event will take place at Leconfield Recreation Club, Miles Lane, HU17 7NW, from 11am to 2pm. It’s designed to give young carers a chance to relax, have fun, and share experiences with peers who understand their unique challenges.
Young carers—those under 18 who care for a family member with a disability, illness, mental health condition, or substance dependency—often juggle immense responsibilities. In England, an estimated 120,000 young people between 5 and 17 are young carers.
- The Children’s Society found that over a quarter of young carers aged 11 to 15 regularly miss school due to their caring duties.
- One in three young carers report feeling stressed, and 80% experience loneliness during school holidays.
- In East Riding alone, 547 young people have identified as young carers, with more than 20% providing over 20 hours of care per week.
Merlin Joseph, Executive Director for Children, Families & Schools, said:
“Young carers do an incredible job looking after their loved ones, often putting others before themselves. We want to ensure they have the support they need to live happy, healthy lives. This event is a chance for young carers to take a well-earned break, connect with others, and tell us what helps them step away from their caring role. Their feedback will be vital in shaping future support for young carers in East Riding.”
