Hull and East Yorkshire is set to benefit from new Government funding aimed at transforming underused brownfield sites. The four-year funding package, worth £21 million, is expected to deliver new homes across the region.
The funding for the region is part of a £234m Brownfield Housing Fund (BHF) which is being allocated to a number of Mayoral Combined Authorities. The BHF is expected to help fund 8,000 new homes on derelict brownfield land around the country.
The £21m for this area has been secured by the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority, led by Mayor Luke Campbell. On the funding, Mr Campbell has said: “This is fantastic news for Hull and East Yorkshire.
“It means we can speed up the delivery of new homes and regenerate areas that’ve been waiting for fresh investment. Unlocking these sites creates jobs, grows our economy and opens up better opportunities for people right across our region.”The funding is set to play a key role in supporting regeneration efforts throughout the region by improving local areas and creating places where people can live and work. The Combined Authority hopes that by accelerating the development of stalled sites it can attract new investment and drive local economic growth.
The BHF announcement is one part of the Government’s newly revealed plans to boost house-building. Proposed locations for seven new towns have also been announced, including in West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester.
On the wider announcements, the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, said: “For decades this country’s planning system has been a direct obstacle to building new homes, ramping up costs and pricing young people out of the housing market.
“Two years ago, I promised that we would grasp the nettle of planning reform. Now we’re planning to build a new generation of new towns, opening up the expansion of our most dynamic cities and raise up new communities.
“Our economic plan is the right one. Through stability, investment and reform we are building a stronger and more secure economy.”
