Drivers advised to plan ahead as A63 Castle Street scheme for Hull reaches new milestones

A major scheme to create better connections for motorists and pedestrians in Hull is reaching a new milestone with improvements moving to a key city centre junction.

The next stage of National Highways’ A63 Castle Street scheme will see the reopening of the Queen Street entry slip road and the temporary closure of the Queen Street westbound exit slip.

The closures will allow for further safety improvements at the junction of Market Place and Queen Street following the opening of a new, fully-lit pedestrian walkway at High Street.

National Highways Project Manager Michael Upshon said:

“We’ve now reached a critical part of the scheme as we progress the dig for the underpass at Mytongate. Work at the junction of Market Place and Queen Street is progressing well, with the pedestrian crossing points now removed and the improved High Street underpass now open to the public.”

The exit slip road will be closed from Monday 13 May for nine weeks.

Queen St exit slip road closure

In the meantime, drivers will be advised to follow a signed diversion route for Queen Street. They will be directed to return eastbound at Daltry Street roundabout to follow a fully signed diversion via Market Place, Liberty Lane, High Street and Humber Street.

Overnight closures

Full overnight closures are due to continue on the A63 between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way.

On the A63 eastbound, there will be full closures tonight (10 May), and then on 13, 16, 17 and 18 May. Each closure will be between 8pm and 6am the following morning.

Having been in place each night since 30 April, westbound closures are set to continue every night until 24 May to enable the important next steps in the upgrade.

On 14 and 15 May, closures will start at the later time of 9pm. Westbound traffic can follow the fully signed, city centre diversion routes. Drivers are advised to allow more time as East Riding Council works are taking place on these dates, with the A164 closed between 7pm – 5am on 14 and 15 May between Skidby roundabout and Jock’s Lodge junction.

Michael said:

“We apologise for any inconvenience and really appreciate everyone’s patience as we complete this key phase of work.”
