96% get first choice Primary School in the East Riding

Parents and carers across the East Riding will from today, Wednesday 16 April, find out which primary school their children will attend in the next academic year, which starts in September.

The proportion of children in the East Riding who have been awarded their first preference of primary or infant school for September 2025 is 96.3 percent.

This year, East Riding of Yorkshire Council received 2,800 applications from parents and carers, and 2,695 (96.3 percent) have received their first choice of school. 2,768 children (98.8 percent) have been allocated a place at one of the three schools’ parent/carers could name as their first, second or third preference.

Merlin Joseph, executive director of children, families and schools, said: “I am delighted that East Riding of Yorkshire Council are once again able to announce that such a high proportion of our children due to start school in September 2025 can go to their first preference school.

“It is excellent news that almost 99 percent of parents and carers have secured one of their three preference schools for their children.

“I’d like to thank parents and carers for making on-time applications and whilst the majority of parent/carers will receive an email with the name of their allocated school this morning, information from primary schools will follow in the coming weeks to enable a smooth transition for children to start their new schools from September.”

Only 32 children or 1.2 percent could not be allocated a place at a school their parents or carers named as a preference. 21 children have been allocated a place at their local catchment school, with a further 11 having been allocated a place at the next nearest school with an available place.

Similar to previous years, the majority of children living in the East Riding will attend a school in the East Riding (98.4 percent).  158 children living in other local authority areas have been allocated places at schools in the East Riding, with the largest number, 129, coming from Hull.

22 of the 118 primary and infant schools in the East Riding of Yorkshire are oversubscribed – receiving more applications than the number of places available.  A further eight schools have filled all available places.

42 East Riding resident children have been allocated places at schools in other local authority areas, including 32 who have been allocated places at schools in Hull.

All 451 parents and carers who applied for their children to start year three at a junior school have been allocated places at the school named as their first preference.
