Hedon has been selected for a six-month long 20mph speed limit trial.
The speed limit in a number of residential areas in the East Yorkshire town will be reduced from 30mph for the trial period that is set to begin in March.
20mph zones have been popping up across the UK in recent years. In 2023, the Welsh Senedd voted to adopt 20mph as the default speed limit for roads in built up areas. Similar 20mph policies have followed in parts of England including on the Wirral where the local council’s website states: “We will be looking to introduce 20mph speed limits on almost all residential roads across Wirral.”
East Riding Council is now looking to introduce 20mph zones with the announcement of the trial in Hedon, which a spokesperson for the authority has said will “create safer, more pedestrian-friendly environments.”
Regarding enforcement, the council says its “goal is for 20mph speed limits to be self-enforcing” while Humberside Police told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that they “can, will, and do enforce the 20mph zones where necessary”. Speed limit enforcement in the East Riding is currently delivered by Safer Roads Humber along with some community police officers.
An East Riding spokesperson added: “Residents are encouraged to share their feedback and observations throughout this trial period.
“We will also be collecting data on vehicle speeds, traffic volumes and accident rates. The feedback and evidence will help determine the effectiveness of the 20mph limit and guide future decisions on road safety measures.”
