Farkhad Akmedov: Russian billionaire's wife sues own son over £450m unpaid divorce bill

May 12, 2020

The wife of a Russian billionaire is bringing legal action against her own son after her husband failed to pay his £450m divorce bill.

Tatiana Akhmedova, 52, was granted a 41.5% share of her ex-husband's £1bn fortune at the High Court in London in 2016.

But the latest hearing in her legal battle against oil and gas tycoon Farkhad Akhmedov was told he has not "voluntarily" offered her any of the £453m she is owed.

Now she is taking legal action against her eldest son, Temur, whom she claims is "heavily involved" in his father's affairs.

Temur Akhmedov, a trader in his mid-20s who lives in London, disputes the allegations made against him.

He says his father said the money would be available to invest on the financial market.

Ms Akhmedova also claims her son has been involved in moving assets such as a yacht and an expensive art collection beyond her reach.

Last March she lost her fight to get hold of her ex-husband's £350m superyacht, despite winning a global freezing order as part of the original divorce settlement.

Mr Akhmedov, who is an ally of Vladimir Putin, was allowed to keep the yacht after a Dubai court ruled it was unlawfully impounded there.

Although Ms Akhmedova has been given £5m during the case, she continues to pursue legal action against the businessman in the UK and abroad.

Mr Akhmedov claims that because he and his ex-wife are not British, and were not married in Britain, a British judge should not have made the decisions.

Mrs Justice Knowles is overseeing the latest stage of the dispute at a virtual hearing of the Family Division of the High Court.

She criticised Mr Akhmedov this week, telling lawyers: "The real problem may well be Farkhad Akhmedov, who had deliberately sought to thwart the English court, and is therefore a shadowy figure in this litigation."

The hearing is due to end later this week and further hearings are scheduled for later in the year.
