Police commissioner candidate Jonathon Seed 'bitterly disappointed' after being disbarred over 30-year-old drink-drive conviction

May 09, 2021

A Tory candidate for police and crime commissioner has said he is "bitterly disappointed" after being disbarred over a 30-year-old drink-driving conviction.

Jonathon Seed confirmed he had pulled out of the race for the Wiltshire role after Conservative HQ said he would disbarred if elected.

Electoral Commission rules state a person cannot stand if they have been convicted of an imprisonable offence - even if the conviction is spent or they were never jailed.

The Conservative Party said it acted after a driving offence had "come to light", but Mr Seed said he had declared the conviction when he applied for the role.

"Party officials confirmed my belief that my offence did not disqualify me," he said in a statement.

"I have now been advised that this is not the case, and that I am disqualified as a PCC candidate. I have therefore withdrawn."

He added: "I am bitterly disappointed that I will not be able to take up the post if I were to be elected. I wish the successful candidate every success in the role.

"I will continue with my work as a local councillor and within the local community, to which I have dedicated my life for the past 20 years."

A Conservative Party spokeswoman said: "Due to a historic driving offence that has come to light, the candidate has been disbarred from becoming the Police and Crime Commissioner."

Mr Seed was re-elected on Saturday as Wiltshire councillor, while the count for crime commissioner is due on Monday.
