In pictures: Joe Biden's inauguration as US president

January 20, 2021

Joe Biden has been sworn in as the new US president, with Kamala Harris his vice president.

The ceremony was unlike any other, without the usual crowds on the National Mall due to the coronavirus pandemic, and held amid unprecedented security.

Here are some of the pictures of the day.

Two weeks earlier the Capitol was being stormed by rioters, but the morning of the inauguration it was a picture of calm - decked in the stars and stripes - with flags instead of people stretching down the famous National Mall.

As Washington got set for its big day, Donald Trump landed in Florida where he will be based from now on - at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

The big question on many people's lips is how vocal will the former president be from now on - and will he try a political comeback in future.

President Biden, Vice President Harris and their spouses gathered a few hours before their big moment in Washington DC.

Donald Trump snubbed the ceremony but Mike Pence, the former vice president, was there.

Lady Gaga gave a powerful rendition of the national anthem before the president took his oath.

Jennifer Lopez and country singer Garth Brooks also performed as the world - and many former presidents - looked on.

American poet Amanda Gorman also gave a reading.

Ms Harris was sworn in by Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor, and My Biden by the chief justice, John Roberts.

The new president placed his hand on a family bible as he took the oath.

Barack Obama was at the event to see his long-time former deputy become president.

The pair embraced as 78-year-old Mr Biden finally achieved his political ambition.

The new president's inauguration speech was a rallying call for unity in the US after a turbulent four years under his predecessor.

Security for the inauguration was at never-before-seen levels amid fears of an attack or disruption by Trump supporters.

Some 25,000 National Guard were stationed in DC and many roads in the centre of the city were locked down.

Kamala Harris and her great niece later walked through the city's streets, while Mr Biden was driven by the Secret Service to the White House.

As he arrived at his new home at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, he and his wife Jill embraced.

Mi Biden later got his first taste of sitting behind the Oval Office desk as president and began signing orders to roll back some of Mr Trump's policies.
