A new bus service is to be launched this month to benefit passengers in Withernsea.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council will introduce the new three-day-a-week Service 70 bus on Monday 5 July, thanks to extra funding from the Government.
Withernsea lost its town bus service, known locally as the ‘little bus’, in April 2018 due to funding pressures on the council’s supported bus budget.
However, since then, the council carried out a detailed transport survey which identified there was a need for a bus among local residents wanting to reach local facilities.
The council was successful in bidding for extra funding from the Government’s Better Deal for Buses programme and the Withernsea bus was a priority in the council’s submitted plans.
The new bus will run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with an extended service on Wednesday afternoons.
The council’s leisure service contributed extra funding to extend the Wednesday service to enable residents to access new health and wellbeing activities at East Riding Leisure Withernsea.
Cllr David Elvidge, portfolio holder for community involvement and voluntary sector, said: “I’m extremely pleased our transportation service team has been able to gain extra money from the Government to fund this service.
“Local residents and councillors said it was a much needed service and I’m happy we can bring it back.”
Councillor Mike Medini, portfolio holder for cultural and leisure assets, said: "The new bus service will open up doors for more Withernsea residents to access facilities and activities in their community.
“Every Wednesday, East Riding Leisure Withernsea will be running an extended programme called Active Wednesdays, giving people more chances to try out and enjoy leisure activities in their area. This is all part of our aim to help people in Withernsea lead happier, healthier, more active lives."
Cllr Lyn Healing, ward councillor for South East Holderness, said: “I am absolutely delighted that our 'little bus' will once more be available to the residents of Withernsea. I have campaigned to reinstate this much needed service.
“I have worked closely with East Ring of Yorkshire Council officers to enable this to happen, and they have through hard work secured funding and I am very grateful to them as I am sure our residents will be too.”
