Mike Brown's Weekend Round-Up

Howdy!
Only me again with a weekend round up and some details of what happened on the show this last week.
On Saturday, I had a staff party to go to. It was actually for all of the volunteers who worked at the recent Hull Real Ale & Cider Festival to thank them for working. So I arrived early (as I normally do when free drinks are involved!) and sat at the bar and waited.......and waited........and waited.......and then I realised it was actually next week and I had got my dates muddled up! Oh well! As it turns out, an old friend happened to be there as well so we had a chat about the old days and later on, I bumped into (not literally) an old girlfriend. I always find it really awkward with ex's, you never know how they're going to react, they'll either look at you like there going to kill you or be really over the top and fling there arms around you! Luckily she did neither, phew!!!
Later on in the night, I recieved a text from a friend to say that he was coming to meet me in town, so I actually ended up staying out until quite late! Now as you may know, I am a Cider drinker, so I'm sure you can imagine how annoyed I was when I found that 3 (yes 3!) of the pubs we visited had actually completely ran out of cider!!! Now I'm no expert, but surely on a Bank Holiday Weekend you order a bit more stock to ensure that you have enough to last? I ended up drinking all kinds of weird drinks, none of them as enjoyable as a nice refreshing pint of Cider.
On Sunday (or showday as I call it in my head!), I woke up to a banging headache. Now, I know what your thinking, "oh it's all down to the drink, it's your own fault, blah, blah, blah...." well, actually I didn't have that much to drink, infact I had considerably less then I usually do (probably due to the lack of Cider available!), maybe I was just genuinly ill and it was all a coincidence that I had been out the night before?
Anyway, my guest on my wee wireless programme this week was 80's Luke, I bet you can't guess what he likes?! Luke is compare of a brand new comedy night happening in Hull this week called "Death By Comedy". Luke told me how the Launch of night will see Ray Kane, Terry Milligan and more take to the stage at The George Hotel in Hull. Luke tells me that there is a ghost at The George and so he said how he will be hosting the whole thing as some sort of member of the spirit world, personally I think all landlords say that there pub is haunted to get a bit of press attention.... I've done it myself!!! Tickets are £5 each and are available at www.myspace.com/deathbycomedy or from the venue which is situated at Land of Green Ginger (which is neither Green, nor Ginger) in Hull's old town.
We also chatted about classic 80's songs and Children's programmes that were around back in the day. Luke has got to be one of the only people I know who actually remembers 'Cockleshell Bay', it was about 2 kids that lived by the Seaside called Robin & Rosie, ring any bells? One particular programme that I loved as a kid was was 'The Flumps', so much so that I ask everyone if they remember it or not. I think I asked Dave Rymer a few weeks ago and he couldn't so I was pleased to hear that 80's Luke could! I'm sure that whoever wrote The Flumps was as high as a kite as it's very bizarre, judge for yourself, click here!.
80's Luke also tells me that he used to present on a Community Radio Station over in Levenshulme, that's Manchester way for those of you don't get out much! He used to present on a station called ALL FM, so it was good to chat with someone with something in common.
Later on the show, on the 'Same Old Song' I played "Express Yourself" by NWA which sampled the Charles Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band's original of the same name. Apart from the rap on the NWA track, the two versions are almost identical. It was good to play them both though, they're both classics in my eyes. Which tracks will we feature this this week? Tune in this Sunday to find out.
Also on the show last week, we had no winners on 'Radio Err', plenty of calls but again I have found that the good people (wll some of them are!) of Holderness are a little shy and wont come on the radio with me. Up for grabs we have Now 69, Wingspan: The Best of Paul McCartney & Wings, The best of The Hollies and a Seaside FM mug, if that isn't enough to coax you on the air what is?! I've searched the Seaside FM prize cupboard and there are no cars in there i'm affraid! Maybe a clue is called for? OK, It's somewhere between 50 and 65. I can't make it any easier than that!
